What is Acupuncture?

According to Wikipedia, “Acupuncture is an alternative methodology originating in ancient China that treats patients by manipulating thin, solid needles that have been inserted into acupuncture points in the skin.”

Chinese culture discovered acupuncture over 5,000 years ago and had a different way of thinking then the western world. They worked with wholistic processes whereas the western culture emphasized physiological processes.

Acupuncture has been shown to be effective for chronic and acute pain, addictions, cardiovascular illnesses, and is known to relieve stress. TCM known as Traditional Chinese Medicine is the most common practiced today. TCM incorporates diet, breathing, and herbal therapies along with the acupuncture treatment.

Western thinking could not understand how a needle inserted into a hand could cure a toothache.

How does it work?

A licensed practitioner uses sterilized, stainless steel needles to stimulate the production of immune-system cells and painkilling “feel-good” endorphins from the body which can reduce stress and anxiety, increase energy, and aid in better sleep performance.  The beauty side of acupuncture is that it will also treat dermatological disorders leaving you with clear skin.  Results show that acupuncture is effective in approximately 70 to 80% of individuals.

Does it hurt?

Not really, usually I will dose off during treatment.  I started acupuncture about six months ago…I feel better and I love the results! I had a terrible tightness in my neck and shoulders so the acupuncturist suggested that we do cupping  too and I was amazed to see how it loosened up my muscles by bringing the flow of blood to the area.

The feeling is like a little tiny pin prick and it can vary person to person. Sometimes there is heaviness or sensation around the needle but it is painless and part of the healing effect. The place I go to also uses little electrodes on the needles to increase the stimulation. This is called Electro-acupuncture which means the application of a pulsating electrical current to the needles as a means of stimulating the acupoints.

Things to remember:
  • Ask lots of questions.
  • Stay open-minded and be sure to inform your acupuncturist of any and all ailments no matter how small they might be.
  • Find a certified acupuncturist in your area by visiting the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. NCCAOM

If you have never tried acupuncture before, give it a shot and see what results you have and relax and enjoy the process.
